A German pensioner has allegedly strangled his wife, dismembered her body, and then drowned himself in an Austrian lake by tying himself to a concrete block with her severed head encased inside.

Austrian authorities have identified the couple as being in their 70s and from Frankfurt, Germany, but released no further information. The Daily Mail report that the husband was discovered two days after police found two suitcases containing the dismembered body of his wife close to the shore of Lake Traunsee, Austria.

One suitcase was initially discovered when a local resident found it floating in the lake. After opening the case and seeing the chopped up remains, he called the police who began to search the area.

Police soon found the second suitcase with more of the woman’s remains inside, but they were unable to identify her as her head was missing. They extended their search and police divers found the man’s body at the bottom of the Lake.

His hands were tied to bags containing rocks, other personal belongings and a concrete block. When Forensic experts cracked the block open they found the wife’s severed head inside.

Authorities believe the woman was strangled sometime between December 25 and January 1 but haven’t confirmed when the drowning occurred.

The Guardian report that State prosecutor, Birgit Ahamer, told a news conference: “This makes us primarily think of an ‘extended suicide’”. Before adding that initial forensic examinations suggested the woman had been strangled and the man had drowned.
