You’d think we’d be sick of writing Avengers: Infinity War articles by now… but you’re wrong, especially when it involves our favourite, fourth-wall-breaking anti-hero, Deadpool.
As you know, Deadpool’s mantra is to make a mockery out of anything and everything, his sharp wit takes no prisoners – whether it’s ripping on the DCEU films or even Thanos himself.
Deadpool actor, Ryan Reynolds is always a delight on Twitter – if you’re not following him, you damn well should be!
In his recent stunt, he channelled his inner ‘Merc With A Mouth’ by going after Marvel Studios’ marketing team and Infinity War directors, Joe and Anthony Russo.
However, what he didn’t expect was the Russo brothers to respond with a burn of their own.
In the lead-up to Infinity War, Joe and Anthony Russo took to Twitter with a request to those who’ve watched the film to kindly not let any spoilers out of the bag – particularly on social media. They also included the hashtag #ThanosDemandsYourSilence.
Not one to pass up an opportunity to troll, Reynolds posted his own version of the letter, which asked fans of Deadpool to kindly keep the plot to themselves while taking some tongue-and-cheek shots at the MCU.
The letter says the cast and crew of Deadpool 2 have all ‘given Maximum Effort’ for the last two years, while ‘maintaining the highest level of super secrets’.
Reynolds, a.k.a Wade Wilson, compares it to the way street magician David Blaine ‘catches bullets’ with his teeth and the ever elusive secret KFC recipe.
The letter goes on to say:
Only a handful of people know the film’s true plot. One of them is not Ryan Reynolds.
We are asking that when you see Deadpool 2, don’t say a f*cking word about the fun sh*t in the movie. Cause it’d be super lame to the fact that Deadpool dies in this one. Kidding. Not kidding. Kidding?
The letter ends with the hashtag:
#WadeWilsonDemandsYourSisterSorryStupidAutoCorrectSilence
This is an obvious pot shot at Marvel Studios and the Russo brothers.
Not one to take things lying down, the Russo brothers responded to Reynold’s jibe with a post of their own:
Well, I guess that settles things, doesn’t it? Let’s be honest, the Infinity Gauntlet trumps all other McGuffin devises thus far in comic book movies. Reynolds too conceded defeat and admitted he ‘deserved that’.
While the Deadpool and MCU franchises are two separate entities (despite both being owned by Marvel Comics) one thing which links both films is actor Josh Brolin. In Deadpool 2 he plays the time travelling mutant Cable, while in Infinity War he voices the Mad Titan himself, Thanos.
Not one to pass up on an Easter egg/pop culture reference, Deadpool even makes a reference to Brolin’s character in the upcoming Deadpool 2 film.
Since it’s worldwide release Avengers: Infinity War has gone on to make make a record-breaking $1 billion in 11 days.
According to CNN, in the first 11 days of its release, Infinity War made more than Wonder Woman, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Guardians of the Galaxy, X-Men: Days of Future Past and Justice League combined.
Over the weekend, (April 28 and 29) Infinity War smashed the record for biggest global opening in film history, beating the previous title holder The Fate of the Furious’s $541 million, with an estimated $640.9m.
Deadpool 2 is out in cinemas across the UK on May 15.
