There’s one scene in Avengers: Infinity War which may give fans a glimpse into what the future has in store for the Marvel Comic Universe.
Full disclaimer here guys: what follows obviously contains spoilers. Not drastic ones, but spoilers all the same, and if you read them, you’re going get annoyed so please steer clear.
If you do read on, don’t you dare come at me on Twitter or Facebook telling me to die because I accidentally let slip Thor killed Han Solo. This is your last chance.
OK, so, cast your mind back to when Thanos gained his final Infinity Stone.
All six of which meet different needs: the Power stone, Mind stone, Time stone, Space stone and Soul stone.
It’s the last one which isn’t so clear to fans. Yet…
The Soul stone, as per the comics, can allow an owner to control the souls of anybody living or dead, as well as execute teleportation.
So when Thanos gets axed in the chest by Thor, he clicks his fingers after saying: ‘You should’ve aimed for the head.’
Thanos then transports underneath a single arch where he sees Gamora as a child, who asks: ‘Is it done?’ Thanos says yes. Gamora smiles and then Thanos is taken back to the battlefield, where he uses the Space stone to teleport away into a calmer, sunnier setting.
Essentially, although a bit of a stretch, this could mean crossover realms are a bona fide thing. Upcoming Marvel flick Ant-Man and the Wasp concerns a bunch of people trying to find a way into a quantum realm to save someone’s mother who’s been stuck there for decades.
Infinity War has opened with an estimated $630 million worldwide, smashing previous-holder The Fate of the Furious with $542 million.
It also set a new record for an opening weekend at the domestic box office, with a projected $250 million. It’s since overtaken the record set by The Force Awakens‘ $248 million.
The movie, which along with Avengers 4, will serve as the grand finale to the MCU, sees Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) Captain America (Chris Evans) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) finally go up against Thanos (Josh Brolin) as he attempts to assemble the Infinity Gauntlet.
To fight off the evil Titan the three will assemble the biggest Avengers team yet featuring Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and countless other heroes from across the cinematic universe.
