Be careful next time you’re out taking a selfie, as according to a new study you’re more likely to die from taking a photo of yourself than a shark attack.

This year selfies have managed to kill 12 people, while potentially the world’s most deadly predator has only managed a meagre eight.

A 66-year-old Japanese tourist died last week while taking a selfie at the Taj Mahal in India, when he slipped down the stairs, The Mirror reports.

Four other selfie deaths were caused by falling, while the next leading cause was being hit or injured by trains.

Now many public places are cracking down on the deadly self-photos. Waterton Canyon in Denver had to close because visitors wouldn’t stop getting pictures with the bears, and Disney banned selfie sticks at its theme parks over safety concerns.

Even notoriously health and safety-free Russia are getting in on it, with an aide to the interior minster saying:

Before taking a selfie, everyone should think about the fact that racing after a high number of ‘likes’ could lead him on a journey to death and his last extreme photo could turn out to be posthumous.

Way not-gnarly, bro.

And using a selfie stick will increase the likelihood of you dying even further, when a mob of angry people take it off you and beat you to death with it.
