Insomniac Reveal New Game Song Of The Deep, GameStop To Publish

After yesterday’s tease for a mysterious game from Insomniac, the Ratchet & Clank devs have now officially released a trailer for Song of the Deep, their brand new underwater platformer, and it looks like the videogame retailer GameStop will be publishing it.

It turns out that Song of the Deep is a labour of love that Insomniac have been working on for the past year or so. You’ll take control of Merryn, a 12 year old girl who builds a small submarine in a search for her father, and ends up exploring a lost underwater civilisation.

GameStop will have no creative control over Song of the Deep, but will be handling the promotion and marketing side of things. It’ll be launching digitally on PS4, Xbox One, and PC in Spring, with a physical copy coming exclusively to GameStop (of course).

This unique partnership will also extend to releasing a full line of merchandise based on the game, including toys and a children’s storybook, which would imply that Insomniac have a lot of confidence in their new title.

Ted Price, Insomniac Founder Says:

We’ve all noticed a resurgence of indie titles over the years, and what’s awesome about that is that the smaller titles tend to take more creative risks and deliver something that’s very different than, say, the AAA, more realistic titles. For us as a company that thrives on creativity and loves building new worlds, that’s a place we love to be as well.

GameStop’s Mark Stanley was initially drawn to the idea because it’s a new, different way to deliver content to consumers. When asked if GameStop would ever consider doing anything like this again in the future, Stanley suggested that he wants to see how Song of the Deep goes first.

Stanley said:

Once we get this project to market, we’ll look back and see should we keep doing this, what could we be doing differently. Maybe there will be more opportunities in the future.
