The man who attacked tube passengers with a knife in the name of Daesh has been sentenced to life in prison and must serve a minimum of eight-and-a-half years.
Muhiddin Mire was given a ‘hybrid hospital’ order and will be taken to the high-security psychiatric hospital Broadmoor to serve his sentence.
If Mire is deemed to no longer need hospital treatment before his minimum sentence is up, he will be taken to another prison to serve out the rest of the sentence, The Mirror reports.
It was on December 5 last year that Mire ‘sawed’ at 56-year-old Lyle Zimmerman’s neck before going on a knife rampage with his rusty blade at Leytonstone station while shouting he was attacking people for his ‘Syrian brothers’.
Mr Zimmerman survived the attack after receiving first aid treatment from a passing junior doctor.
He said:
I have been left with a scar on my neck which I am aware of only because it pulls when I use my voice but is otherwise superficial and healing well.
At his hearing at the Old Bailey, it was revealed that Mire suffered a persecution complex and had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.
Mire’s doctors claim he increasingly identified with Islamic extremism and that his mental health deteriorated, with him believing he was both possessed by spirits and that former Prime Minister Tony Blair was his ‘guardian angel’.
A consultant psychiatrist, Dr Shaun Bhattacherjee, who’s helping treat Mire at Broadmoor Hospital, said he was ‘clearly mentally ill at the time of the events,’ adding that Mire poses a ‘very severe’ risk to the public and needs further treatment.
