And there are no signs of this slowing down yet as the blockbuster is now the highest grossing horror film of all time.

It has surpassed The Exorcist to take the title role based on domestic box office sales.

At the moment The Exorcist still holds the title role on an international basis earning $441.3 million globally compared to It‘s $404.3 million, but It is still in cinemas and shows no sign of leaving our screens yet.

It also has to be noted this record doesn’t take inflation into account and cinema ticket prices have really increased since The Exorcist was made in 1973.

Also the horror classic was released twice thanks to a director’s cut.

But if you have seen It you will know it truly deserves the title.

So far the horror hit has earned $236.3 million in America beating The Exorcist‘s $232.9 million.

This is good news for studios New Line and Warner Bros. Pictures who are already planning a sequel to the film based on the popular novel.

The first film follows a group of outcast children who are terrorised by the haunting clown Pennywise.

And with promises the second chapter will be darker than the first, we can’t wait to see what horrors it brings…
