After all those warnings it now looks like it’s not smoking weed that lowers your IQ, it’s smoking tobacco.

The research, published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, used data from 2235 children.

The data mapped tobacco and cannabis use against IQ at age 15, and educational performance at age 16.

The sample of teenagers was taken from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children and the researchers said:

There is much debate about the impact of adolescent cannabis use on intellectual and educational outcomes.

We investigated associations between adolescent cannabis use and IQ and educational attainment.

According to results, those who had used cannabis 50 times had the same results as those who had never used it for both IQ and educational performance.

Scientists now say there is a link between smoking cigarettes and lower achievement in education – even when cannabis is excluded.

Incredibly, evidence suggested that cigarette smoking dropped IQ and educational performance in those who had never even tried cannabis.

The researchers wrote:

These findings suggest that adolescent cannabis use is not associated with IQ or educational performance once adjustment is made for potential confounds, in particular adolescent cigarette use.

Modest cannabis use in teenagers may have less cognitive impact than epidemiological surveys have previously suggested.

Is this yet another reason that smoking weed isn’t as bad for you as smoking cigarettes?
