Contrary to popular belief ginger people have been on a winning streak, as of late, and today is a marquee date for the flamed haired community as it is officially ‘International Kiss A Ginger Day’.
No, this isn’t a made up thing cooked up by a lonely red-head who feels ostracised by the world, it’s a legitimate celebration in which you give a (consensual) kiss to a fellow ginger person.
The novelty celebration day was formed in response to the cruel, and rather sadistic ‘Kick A Ginger Day’ campaign.
According to Cosmopolitan, less than two per cent of the world’s population have red hair, and while that is a small proportion of the world’s population, it’s a still a lot of people to kiss!
While the occasionally mockery of ginger people for their unorthodox red hair and freckles is never okay, apparently it might be because we’re secretly jealous of the fantastic sex life they have.
According to Everyday Health, Werner Habermehl PhD, from the Hamburg Research Institute in Germany, compared the sex lives and hair colour of hundreds of women and discovered women with red hair to have a much more active sex life.
In his study he wrote:
The sex lives of women with red hair were clearly more active than those with other hair colour, with more partners and having sex more often than the average.
The research shows that the fiery redhead certainly lives up to her reputation.
So some of the world’s most glamours people are red-heads including; Jessica Chastain, Amy Adams, Isla Fisher, Ewan McGregor and Prince Harry and in sport, you have the likes of Conor McGregor and Paul Scholes leading the way.
While in literature, Geroge R.R. Martin wrote that Game of Thrones character Ygritte (one-time lover of Jon Snow) had hair which was ‘kissed by fire’.
While South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker are the recent culprits in the anti-ginger campaign (it’s a joke, I am highly aware) the stigma against red-heads actually dates all the way back to the middle ages. During that time period, it was believed red hair was a sign of ill omen and that you were a witch.
Anyway, International Kiss A Ginger Day was kicked off by Derek Forgie as a reaction to bullying ginger people have to endure.
And they’re not witches, so get out there and kiss one.
