Well, it’s official, the feature everyone has been asking Mark Zuckerberg for since the dawn of time has been announced.

That’s right, the dislike button cometh.

The billionaire founder announced the move to introduce the button during a Q+A session held at Facebook’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California.

The 31-year-old said the button would be a way for people to express empathy and stated developers were “very close” to having it ready for user testing.

Speaking to the audience on Tuesday, Zuckerberg said: “People have asked about the ‘dislike’ button for many years.”

“Probably hundreds of people have asked about this, and today is a special day because today is the day that I actually get to say we are working on it, and are very close to shipping a test of it.”

However, he went on to explain how he did not want the button to become a mechanism in which people could ‘downvote’ others’ posts – explaining that it will be for times when clicking “like” on a “sad” post could come across as insensitive.

The chief executive did not elaborate on when to expect the new button, and did not confirm what it would be called.

So now, we wait.
