Apparently both the replacing of the queen and the complete legalisation of cannabis are up for debate as the new government gets down to business.
Lawmakers in the island nation will debate a constitutional amendment that would replace our very own Queen Elizabeth II as head of state, transforming the country into a republic, reports The Independent.
In a speech to parliament, Governor General Sir Patrick Allen said the proposal is a ‘major action item’ on the new government’s 2016-2017 agenda, and would see the Queen replaced with a ‘Non-Executive President’.
Sir Patrick Allen also dropped hints about the legalisation of marijuana, saying the government would:
Give full legislation to marijuana to be used for the specified purposes.
YouTubeJamaican Labour Party leader Andrew Holness scraped a narrow victory in February’s general elections after promising voters tax cuts and a higher minimum wage in pace of the outgoing government’s austerity program.
The government also plans to set up a single anti-corruption body, and reform the tax and pension system, Mr Allen said.
The debates are just the first step – all the proposals need to be passed by Parliament to become law.
But you never know, before too long the Queen may not be head of state in Jamaica, but her and Phil may be able to chill in Kingston with a couple of phat ones.
