John Oliver summed up many people’s feelings on Sunday’s Last Week Tonight when he named 2016 ‘the fucking worst.’
Between the Syrian refugee crisis, Zika virus, Brexit, the numerous terrorist attacks, Hurricane Matthew, and the deaths of Alan Rickman, David Bowie, Gene Wilder, Leonard Cohen and Prince, 2016 has been a lot to swallow.
Now, a guy who can’t even control his hair has been given control of the nuclear codes. And John Oliver isn’t having it.
YouTubeThe British comedian didn’t mince words in his response to the victory of U.S. president-elect Donald Trump. “How the fuck did we get here?” he asked on his HBO show. “And what the fuck do we do now?”
Good fucking question, John.
So what better way to validate everyone’s concerns than getting a bunch of celebrities and people on the street to explain why 2016 sucks and collectively say ‘fuck you’ to this year?
That’s exactly what he did. Between hate, sexism, Muhammad Ali’s death, Harambe, and a whole lot of other terrible things, passers-by gave a voice for those of us who can’t wait for 2017 to get here already.
YouTubeAs for Oliver’s main concern of President Trump? Well, instead of moving to Canada, he said Americans need ‘to stay here and fight’.
He continued:
And not just politically in four years when he’s up for reelection. But constantly, monitoring legislation as it moves through Congress, and fucking voting when your legislators come up for reelection in two years.
But that is still below the barest minimum of what is going to be needed, because for the last eight years we’ve had a president who we could assume would generally stand up for the rights of all Americans, but that is going to change now.
So we’re going to have to actively stand up for one another. And it can’t be just sounding off on the internet or sharing think pieces or videos like this one, that echo around your bubble. I’m talking about actual sacrifice to support people who are now under threat.
YouTubeThe end of the show was basically a montage of all the different ways that 2016 sucked, something that the show had been working on for a while. Oliver said: “Even though there’s still seven weeks to go, I feel pretty comfortable in calling it: 2016 has been the fucking worst.”
