New details have been released for the highly anticipated John Wick: Chapter 3.
The movie franchise now famed for one of Keanu Reeves’ most iconic characters, has released a teaser poster and official synopsis for the third film.
To think, it all started because Iosef Tarasov – played by Alfie Allen – decided to kill John Wick’s puppy. If he could’ve just shown some restraint we wouldn’t be here, right now, excitedly waiting for the third – and most likely final film in the John Wick saga.
John Wick: Chapter 3 will begin filming on April 26 and while the plot has been kept tightly under wraps, we can assume it will pick up right after – or just after – the end of its 2017 predecessor.
At the end of the last film, John Wick had committed the cardinal sin by killing another assassin at The Continental hotel, a neutral ground for assassins.
His actions not only led to him being disavowed by the guild but also having a huge bounty placed on his head.
Chad Stahelski, who helmed the first two films, will be back in the director’s chair and screenwriter Derek Kolstad will be returning as well to pen the script.
The hyper-violent John Wick: Chapter 2 was a solid box office hit for film studio Lionsgate, raking in $92 million (over £80 million) in the US.
The original John Wick was released in 2014, with very little press or promotion and yet, in spite of this, it quickly became a cult hit.
Stahelski promised the third film would, finally, explore the origins of John Wick – aka the ‘baba yaga’, aka ‘the man you send in to kill the boogeyman’.
The official synopsis, as reported by Collider, reads:
John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is on the run for two reasons… he’s being hunted for a global $14 million dollar open contract on his life, and for breaking a central rule: taking a life on Continental Hotel grounds.
The victim was a member of the High Table who ordered the open contract. John should have already been executed, except the Continental’s manager, Winston, has given him a one-hour grace period before he’s “Excommunicado” – membership revoked, banned from all services and cut off from other members. John uses the service industry to stay alive as he fights and kills his way out of New York City.
Recent reports suggest that Chapter 3 is looking at Spain and Russia as possible locations, though filmmaker Stahelski is keen to take the action back to the inner workings of New York.
Much like how Chapter 2 began shortly after the ending of the original John Wick, it looks like this year’s instalment will launch into the story immediately as well.
John Wick may want to retire, but if his movies keep being this good, fans may never be willing to let him go.
Away from the film, there are also plans to make a series exploring the expanded universe and the mysterious Continental Hotel, which is a safe haven for the world’s deadliest assassins.
The series, titled The Continental has been picked up by American TV network Starz.
John Wick Chapter Three is set for release on May 16, 2019 and we absolutely cannot wait.
