As alternative facts plague the President of the United States, observers are quick to point out discrepancies and inaccuracies coming from his administration.

With politically-motivated messages spreading through social media, most of us are faced with confusion about who or what to believe.

But comedian, Jon Stewart has come up with a ‘definitive’ answer; the yard stick by which to measure all truth, apparently, and the phrase to watch out for if you think President Donald Trump might be stretching or moulding the facts for his own agenda.

You can watch Stewart explaining his theory in this clip from The Late Show:

Stewart laughed almost hysterically – presumably in apt disbelief – as he pointed out three times when Trump has spread misinformation over a variety of contentious issues, from his electoral college win to the murder rate in America.

Debating the rhetoric of Trump on Steven Colbert’s The Late Show, Stewart said:

Trump lies more in one press conference than CNN does in a year… He’s lying on purpose.

You know how I know? Because he constantly says the phrase, ‘Believe me’.

Nobody says ‘Believe me’ unless they are lying.

Relations between the press and the President of the United States hit an all time low last week when Sean Spicer banned some reporters from CNN, Buzzfeed, The New York Times and Politico from attending an informal press briefing.

The bans have called into question President Donald Trump’s respect for the first amendment, which enshrines the freedom of the American people.

But Stewart also had a special message for the media, which went a little something like this:

Hey guys. So I heard Donald Trump broke up with you…Stings a little, doesn’t it? Finally thought you’d met your match; a blabber mouth who’s as thin-skinned and narcissistic as you are.

Well, now it’s over – and good riddance, I say! Kick him to the curb! It is time for you to get your groove back.  This break up with Donald Trump has given you, the media, an amazing opportunity for self-reflection and improvement…

Do something for yourself. Take up a hobby… I recommend journalism.

The media are going to need a lot of aloe to heal that burn…

Believe me.
