It seems like everyone and their mum is currently enjoying Battlefield 1 right now, but in between rounds of shooting each other in the face, one might wonder how historically accurate this World War I shooter really is.
Thankfully, YouTube channel Games of History has gone and done all the pesky research so you don’t have to. They’ve just put out an incredibly detailed video on Battlefield 1’s campaign, going over the fact and the fiction within.
It’s a little over an hour, but it’s well worth the time of any gamers/history buffs out there. Check it out just below.
As it turns out, Battlefield 1 is a fantastic game, but is rife with historical inaccuracies. The video goes on to outline these inaccuracies in great detail, and even manages to fill in a few things the game never explains.
If DICE’s excellent shooter has gotten you in the mood to learn more about the Great War, this really is a fantastic gateway into doing so.
I won’t outline everything the video does (as that would take ages, and would detract from the great work they’ve done) but I can give you a few teasers.
For example, Australian character Jack Foster seems to be based off real life WWI soldier James Martin – Martin was 14 years old when he died of typhoid during the Gallipoli Campaign.
Oh, and as in the campaign, a British tank crew did indeed spend time behind lines during the Battle of Amiens. They pressed on and advanced for nine hours before being killed and captured.
All in all, checking out the above video will give you a little more insight into the inner workings of one of the most destructive conflicts of all time, and that’s a good thing to have.
