Reports suggest police first attended the apartment as a result of a phone call from Jonghyun’s sister at 4.42PM. She allegedly thought Jonghyun had committed suicide as a result of a number of text messages which acted as a ‘last goodbye’.

He arrived at the hospital after being found at 6.10pm Korea time on 18 December.

A statement from Gangnam Police read:

On December 18, 2017 at 4:42PM Jonghyun’s older sister reported to Police that her brother was about to commit suicide.

We went to his residence in Chungdam and discovered that he had attempted to commit suicide.

Emergency responders were with us at the time so we rushed him to the Konkuk University Hospital in a state of cardiac arrest.

Jong-hyun’s band ShINee rose to prominence in 2008 in South Korea, and also saw success in Japan.
