Kanye West wants you to understand one thing: he only says offensive things because he has to.

While performing in Manila, Philippines, over the weekend, Yeezy paused halfway through his show to address his on-again off-again feud with Taylor Swift.

It was his first concert since the February release of his seventh album, Life of Pablo, and after performing ‘Famous’, West defended his notorious outburst at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, arguing that he only said ‘what everyone else was thinking’ when he stole the mic off Swift.

He said:

That night when I went onstage was the beginning of the end of my life. Lady Gaga cancelled the tour the next day. You know what night I’m talking about — when I just said what everybody else was thinking. So if I get in trouble for saying the truth, what’s being said the rest of the time?

Then, ‘Ye addressed his latest track ‘Famous’, where he – again – insulted Swift by claiming in the lyrics that he ‘made that bitch famous’.

He continued:

This is the song that broke the writer’s block for me, because it’s something I wanted to say so bad that they told me I couldn’t say.

I had to fight every day of my life, with the whole world turned against me, for saying out loud what everyone else felt. But that’s the job of an artist, of a true artist: not to be controlled by finances, not to be controlled by perceptions, but only to be controlled by their truth.

I feel like it’s time he let that incident go.
