MTV’s Catfish had one of its most alarming cases last week when an episode revealed a man was convinced he had been dating Katy Perry for six years, despite never actually having a face-to-face conversation with her.

Spencer Morrill told the show’s presenters, Nev Schulman and Max Joseph, he was ‘100% confident’ he had been exchanging emails and texts with the singer for over half a decade. He even went as far to spend a quarter of his savings on an engagement ring for her.

As we all imagined, Spencer was never actually speaking to Katy – who has had relationships with John Mayer, Russell Brand and Orlando Bloom during their ‘six year relationship’ – but a British woman named Harriet posing as the singer.

Most of us found the whole thing pretty hilarious, but Katy had a different view on it all.

According to the Independent, she had commented on the episode during an appearance on SiriusXM radio show.

She said:

You know, like, my heart goes out to him actually because anybody that’s been fooled like that or just, you know, people have dreams, and people live in different parts of world where not everything is always so accessible… I felt bad for him, and so I didn’t really like to indulge in that. Someone sent me a link [to the story] and I didn’t actually read through it because I just think it’s really unfortunate and very sad.

Poor guy. Maybe Katy Perry will arrange a date to help him get over those six years of deception.
