Finding out you accidentally got married would have you thinking you’re in a real-life version of the Hangover – or that Friends episode where Ross and Rachel got hitched in Las Vegas while drunk. This is exactly what happened to actors Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder.
Well, it nearly did, also they weren’t blind drunk or in Vegas. It happened 26 years ago, way before Reeves donned his trench coat and Ryder was using Christmas lights to get messages from the ‘upside-down’.
While doing press for their new romcom, Destination Wedding, the co-stars revealed they were actually married at one point.
First things first, how odd is it to see Reeves in a film where he’s not shooting down a bunch of goons in a balletic hail of bullets for once, it’s refreshing to say the least. But it is true, Reeves and Ryder think they inadvertently got hitched when they both starred in 1992’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula, directed by the Legendary Francis Ford Coppola and starring British screen legends Gary Oldman and Sir Anthony Hopkins.
When asked about their feelings on marriage and weddings by Entertainment Weekly, Ryder revealed:
We actually got married in Dracula. No, I swear to god, I think we’re actually married in real life.
It was the first of four films the two worked on together, Ryder played Mina, fiancée to Reeves’ Jonathan Harker, a poor solicitor who went to visit Oldman’s Count Dracula and came back nearly-possessed and grey-haired, too bad his dreadful English accent remained throughout the film.
Before a Dracula-infatuated Mina leaves the boring Harker, the two get married in a fancy wedding ceremony, which turned out to be real.
Ryder explained:
In that scene, Francis used a real Romanian priest. We shot the master and he did the whole thing. So I think we’re married.
The John Wick and Matrix star tried to play off the notion by joking ‘It’s lovely to see you again’ to Ryder, however, she insisted it was a real thing which went down. She even pointed out both exchanged ‘I dos’ in front of a real priest, which was when Reeves came to a sudden realisation that ‘Oh my god, we’re married!’.
It’s like the moment when Ben Affleck found out how bad Batman Vs Superman was on that press junket and the iconic intro from The Sound of Silence begins to play.
Luckily for the both of them, they were in character at the time. So technically speaking, Johnathan and Mina are married, not Keanu and Winona. Ironically, both actors have never been married.
However, in an alternate universe which I like to call the Bizarro World (thank you DC Comics), Arsenal FC is the world’s dominant football club, the UK never left the EU, Donald Trump isn’t President of the United States and Reeves and Winona have been happily married for 26 years.
It’s good to dream I guess.
Destination Wedding is due for release in US cinemas August 31.
