Oscar favourite Leonardo DiCaprio has said he’d like to play the Russian president Vladimir Putin in a future movie.

The Revenant star was talking to the German magazine Welt when he claimed he’d be interested in playing the controversial Russian leader.

DiCaprio said:

Putin would be very, very, very interesting. I would like to play him.

The six-time Oscar-nominated actor also revealed more about his 2010 meeting with President Putin, when DiCaprio attended the International Forum on Tiger Conservation in St. Petersburg, where Putin called Leo a ‘real man’.

DiCaprio said:

My fund has several projects aimed at financial support for protecting these wild cats [Siberia tigers]…  Putin and me spoke only about these magnificent animals, not about politics.

Putin’s not the only famous Russian figure that Leo would like to play though. He also said he’d like to step into the role of 20th century revolutionary Lenin, as well as the infamous ‘mad monk’ Rasputin.

DiCaprio explained:

I think there should be more films about Russian history because it has many stories worthy of Shakespeare. That is fascinating for an actor… Lenin also would be an interesting role. I would like also to star as Rasputin.

The acclaimed actor is the favourite to win the best actor award at this year’s Oscars for his grueling portrayal of real life survivalist Phillip Glass, in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant – which picked up an impressive 12 nominations.

And Leo might get lucky when it comes to playing Rasputin as well, Warner Brothers reportedly purchased the rights to a Rasputin movie and rumour has it that they want the Titanic star for the titular lead.

Unfortunately this was reported in 2013 so they clearly aren’t ‘Russian’ to develop the film.
