In his acceptance speech the modest star praised the work of the other nominees:

What an incredible honour, wow, that meant a lot thank you… and to the other fantastic performances in this category, you guys were unbelievable. What a terrific year for film.

The star praised the dedication of The Revenant’s director, Alejandro Inarritu, saying: “Thank you for allowing me to be part of this journey with you, your leadership, your vision, your acute attention to making every day so visceral and real for us. I’ve never had an experience like this in my entire life”.

DiCaprio took the time to passionately describe the ‘unfathomable’ amount of work that the crew put into the film and thanked all his co-stars. He also joked that Tom Hardy would never really bury him on a cold mountain.

As he wrapped his speech, DiCaprio took the time to honor the Native Americans depicted in The Revenant.

He said:

It is time that we recognize your history and that we protect your indigenous lands from corporate interests and people that are out there to exploit them… It is time that we heard your voice and protected this planet for future generations.

This is Leo’s eleventh nomination and third win. He first earned a trophy for Best Actor for The Aviator in 2005, followed by The Wolf of Wall Street in 2014.
