Lambeth Council has confirmed they are considering renaming a street after David Bowie, following the iconic singer’s death earlier this year.
In the wake of the legendary musician’s death, a mural in his hometown of Brixton became a focal point as fans laid out a sea of tributes to the star and held an impromptu street party to celebrate his music.
The Council has now confirmed that the mural will be listed to ensure its protection and are even considering the possibility of renaming the street to honour the star.
They said in a statement:
Lambeth council is set to locally list the David Bowie mural beside Morley’s in Brixton that became a shrine to the artist who died in January.
Local listing would protect the mural and the council is also considering renaming the area where the mural is in Tunstall Place.
The council is in contact with Bowie’s family about the many suggestions for a permanent memorial, including statues and place naming.
But Lambeth Council’s Lib Peck stressed that Bowie’s family could have the final say in the renaming of the street:
It is ultimately the family’s decision as to what may be appropriate. We must respect that and be patient.
