Berlin was a key stonghold for Nazi’s during the war, so it became a major target for allied forces. The city was obliterated, and people took to underground bomb shelters for safety.
One of the last remaining civilian air raid shelters is now open to the public after being restored and tidied up, and these photo’s from inside show how scary and haunting the place is.
The maze of tunnels became a second home for Berliners when the air raid siren sounded. They ended up living in cramped conditions with a depleted air supply.
A lot of artifacts have been preserved immaculately, and it looks as though the place has been frozen in time.
The tunnels have become a morose tourist attraction, but they’re an important part of Berlin’s history. 80% of Berlin was destroyed by bombing in the war, which is something we don’t really think about in Britain.
I’m looking at going to Berlin next year, so I’ve added this to my list of places to visit.
