It looks like record breaking Netflix documentary Making a Murderer could be set to hit the big screen next, as an adaptation is rumoured to be in its early stages.

At the moment Oscar-winning actor Billy Bob Thornton is the bookies’ favourite to take on the lead role of Steven Avery, reports the Mirror.

Irish bookies BoyleSports have Billy Bob at 9/2, ahead of Danny McBride – best known for playing Kenny Powers in Eastbound & Down, as well as films such as Pineapple Express and Up In The Air.

The film could hit cinemas before 2020, as Steven Avery continues to protest his innocence in the murder of Teresa Halbach, and other names in the mix to play him on screen include Jeff Bridges, who has received 9/1 odds, and John Travolta, Sean Penn, and Daniel Day Lewis are all outside bets at around 50/1.

Given the speculation surrounding his Oscar chances, Leonardo DiCaprio is unsurprisingly in the mix too – with odds of 16/1 alongside Brad Pitt.

The news has obviously sparked speculation about who else will feature in the film and one Twitter user put forward a great case for War and Peace’s Paul Dano to play Brendan Dassey:

Making A Murderer had everyone glued to their screens as they tried to figure out if Steven Avery was innocent or guilty.

The world has been gripped by the case of Teresa Halbach and Steven Avery and a motion picture seems likes the next port of call given the success of the Netflix series.

Personally, I’d absolutely love to see Billy Bob take it on.
