Kathleen Zellner – the lawyer now representing the subject of Netflix series Making A Murderer – is placing Avery’s plight in the hands of a team of forensics experts who are combing the family’s salvage yard.

According to the Mirror, Ms Zellner has instructed the team to re-analyse all the evidence from the crime scene – including his trailer, garage, burn pit and Teresa Halbach’s car.

The forensic experts plan to use the most technologically advanced ‘Luminol’ testing to prove that Teresa Halbach was not killed in either Mr Avery’s garage or his trailer, as was claimed in court in 2006.

Luminol testing is used to detect blood which is not visible to the naked eye and the technology has seen significant improvements since the murder of Ms Halbach in 2005.

According to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension:

Scientists can take advantage of the luminol reaction to locate potential blood evidence that would be undetectable through visual examination.

In a statement Ms Zellner said:

We are confident Mr. Avery’s conviction will be vacated when we present the new evidence and results of our work to the appropriate court.

At the time of Ms Halbach’s killing no blood was found in Mr Avery’s home or his garage – but traces of it were found in her car, a Toyota Rav 4.

In recent weeks Ms Zellner has purchased the exact same model of car that Teresa was driving on the day she died, reports the Mirror.

According to reports, the lawyer will use that as part of her review to prove that the evidence at the original trial was not sufficient to ensure that both Steven Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey have safe convictions.

Ms Zellner has visited Mr Avery at the maximum security Waupun Correctional Institution four times in the last month, and she has instructed his family not to talk to the press as the plan to have his conviction overturned takes shape.

An unnamed source told the Mirror Online:

While Kathleen is very happy and appreciative of the growing campaign to have him released she is now taking complete control of the situation.

She is working with her own team of lawyers, experts and with Steven’s previous lawyers and with his family to ensure that they can present the best possible case.

Let’s put it this way when it comes to Steven and Brendan’s case – this is now more than a TV show – it’s a well oiled machine.

So many twists in the tale…
