As parts of Europe face the hottest June on record with a heatwave sweeping across the continent, people have been coming up with inventive ways to cool down.
Fountains and mist machines are being used as a way to stay out of the heat for too long, fire hydrants are being transformed into sprinklers, and people are riding around on mopeds naked.
Well, one man has been riding around on a moped naked, justifying his actions once he was pulled over by police by stating: ‘it’s too hot’. Which, fair.
The man was driving his moped in Brandenburg, Germany, when police in the area spotted his unusual attire. Wearing only his helmet and sandals, the unknown man insisted he was only doing so to cool down.
Police tweeted two pictures of the incident, describing themselves as ‘speechless’ and asking their followers to put their safety first in these situations.
The pictures showed a police officer speaking to the man, whose modesty was protected slightly by the blurring out of certain areas.
Take a look at the tweet below:
Yikes. Luckily, the man avoided arrest and was allowed to continue on with his journey without facing any punishment.
The police confirmed in the comments section that driving in the nude isn’t a punishable offence unless someone complains – at which point an administrative offence notice may occur.
I mean, who can really blame him? This week, a temperature of 38.6°C was recorded in Brandenburg, beating the 70-year-old record for the highest temperature recording for June, The Telegraph reports.
The high temperatures come as a 2,000 mile wide ‘Saharan bubble’ is blowing hot air from Africa to Europe, which has resulted in extreme heat following days of downpours and flooding.
This has resulted in extremely high temperatures being recorded in much of Europe, including Germany, France, Lithuania, Poland, Greece, and Spain.
Such hot summers are only set to continue, with experts saying heatwaves early in the summer are likely to be more frequent in coming years as a result of climate change.
The man on the moped isn’t the only one stripping down in a desperate attempt to cool down; in Munich, security guards ordered a group of women sunbathing topless in public to cover up.
However, this reportedly backfired on them when other sunbathers took their tops off in a support ‘of solidarity’. An urgent motion was then introduced in a city council meeting to allow topless sunbathing, The Telegraph reports.
Authorities have warned temperatures could top 40°C in parts of the continent over the coming days.
Stay safe, guys.
