A self-styled African messiah, known as ‘Jesus of Zimbabwe’, has died after attempting to emulate Jesus’s 40-day fast.
Khulu Reinfirst Manyuka, 73, died from malnutrition after fasting for 30 days out in the bush. He left his home to pray and conduct his attention to God, away from earthly distractions.
Mr Manyuka was a very spiritual person, and well known for his faith in the community.
A close relative said:
He was a very spiritual man. It’s unfortunate he had to die this way. After a month we got the sad news of his death. He was a healthy and religious old man who did not even look his age.
He only lasted a month, despite having no history of illness. A police spokesman said there have been numerous cases of people dying from fasting, but they are powerless to stop people.
With all respects, the lesson here is: never try and out-Jesus the Son of God himself.
