A teacher from Northern Ireland was left in excruciating pain after leaving his contact lenses in following a night on the pop.

Niall Dumigan learned the hard way that warnings regarding the removal of contact lenses are not to be taken lightly after he developed an ulcer on his cornea. Ouch.

When he woke up he did remove his contacts, but then after just a few hours the man from County Down decided to put a fresh pair in, and it only made matters worse as the day progressed.

Unsurprisingly he stated ‘I never, ever want to go through that again’ and likened the pain to having his eyes ‘engulfed in flames’.

The 28-year-old, who was featured on Channel 4’s ‘24 Hours in A&E’, admitted he and his partner had enjoyed a late one at London’s Pride festival and that alcohol may have impaired his judgement.

Niall recalled: ‘I was aware of the dangers associated with sleeping in your contacts but I’d always thought, “Well, it can’t be that bad.” How wrong I was. And it’s so easy to forget to take them out, especially when you’ve had a drink.’

Despite wearing lenses since his teenage years it is not the first issue he has faced. He has previously had his eyeballs scraped to remove dried out contacts.

The teacher has since undergone successful laser eye surgery to avoid any future issues, and no longer needs his lenses. Smart move Niall, smart move.
