A guy who’d paid to have his wife killed got the fright of his life when she showed up alive at her own funeral to confront him.
The bizarre story sounds like something straight out of a True Crime drama on Channel 5 but, according to the Mirror, this incredible scene went down for real in Melbourne, Australia.
Balenga Kalala paid a team of hitmen £3,500 to take out his wife Noela Rukundo as she attended her stepmother’s funeral in Burundi early last year, because he thought she was cheating on him.
However, the gunmen didn’t want to kill the woman because they knew Ms Rukundo’s brother. So they told her what her husband had planned for her, and then lied to Mr Kalala and claimed they’d carried out the murder as agreed.
He then told her family that she had died in an accident in Africa and organised her funeral. Things got pretty awkward, however, when she travelled home and confronted her partner directly after the mourners had left.
In an interview with the Washington Post, she recalled him asking, “Is it my eyes? Is it a ghost?”, to which she dramatically replied, “Surprise! I’m still alive!”
He initially tried to deny his role in the failed hit but Rukundo got him to confess during a phone conversation that was secretly recorded by the police. He was later sentenced to nine years in prison.
Speaking to the BBC, she said:
I felt like somebody who had risen again. My situation, my past life? That is gone. I’m starting a new life now. I will stand up like a strong woman.
The whole thing is a pretty incredible story. The question is, who’ll be the first to buy the movie rights to this one?
