Man Proposes To Boyfriend After Australia Votes Yes To Gay Marriage

A man proposed to his boyfriend immediately after he found out Australia had voted ‘Yes’ to same-sex marriage.

In the heartwarming video, James Brechney and Stuart Henshell were among the crowd waiting for the results of the vote on same-sex marriage this morning.

Moments after the vote was revealed, Mr Brechney got down on one knee to propose to his partner Stuart.

He was interviewed by a Nine AU reporter shortly after the result, when he said:

As terrible as this postal survey has been, the by-product has been this beautiful moment.

We’ve been fighting for this for so long… We’ve been together for two and a half years and it’s just been a journey for us…

We’ve been together for two-and-a-half years and I think the moment has really blown us away.

Stuart, I love you with all my heart and I want to tell you something in front of the cameras.

Will you marry me?

Stuart looks visibly shocked in the video and nods sheepishly before they embrace to cheers from the crowd.

The ring was Stuart’s grandma’s ring, who was from the UK and it wasn’t the only family connection to the happy moment – James’ parents were watching in the crowd.

James’ mother welcomed Stuart into the family with open arms.

James said:

We’d love to get married early next year but we’ll probably say we want to get married by Christmas to put a little bit more pressure on the Prime Minister.

We’ll probably have one of the tackiest weddings in Australian history. It’s going to be the campest wedding.

It’s only going to do wonders for the economy.

Australians have voted overwhelmingly in favour of legalising same-sex marriage in a recent poll.

The poll, while non-binding, showed 61.6 per cent of people were in favour of allowing same-sex couples to wed each other.

A bill has since been introduced into the Senate late on Wednesday, with Prime Minister Malcolm Turbull saying the government would try and get the historic legislation passed before Christmas.

He said:

Australians have spoken in their millions and they have voted overwhelmingly yes for marriage equality.

They voted yes for fairness, yes for commitment, yes for love.

There was massive turn-out for the important vote, with 79.5 per cent turn out for the simple question ‘Should the marriage law be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry?’

The video above is a perfect example of the joy these laws can bring in recognising the love of homosexual couples throughout the world.
