A Tesco Express customer was left angered by staff after being explicitly told not to purchase items for a homeless woman.

Daniel Heard was at a store he visits ‘up to four times a week’ when the staff member issued the harsh request.

The incident took place in Lincoln at the corner of High Street and Corporation Street on Sunday, May 19.

Heard, clearly frustrated by the matter, told Lincolnshire Live he asked the person outside the store if they wanted anything:

I think they said yes, so I said I’d get them something nice.

I walked down the aisle looking for something for myself and then the woman ran across and popped in the shop to say she wasn’t hungry, but she’d love a milkshake.

After being confronted by a member of staff who suggested the woman may be stealing, Heard was ‘disgusted’ and told by the Tesco Colleague not to purchase the milkshake.

He explained:

The chap then turned to me and said don’t purchase it for her. I said I’ll spend my money on what I want and he said if I did they wouldn’t serve me.

Heard continued:

Every time something like this happens it scratches away a bit of my humanity.

A lot of them are just in a bad way and just need a bit of compassion.

These people are starving and at the end of the day, they’re only going to put it in the bin.

A spokesperson for Tesco acknowledged the incident and reportedly apologised.

Their quote read:

The [homeless] individual in question is currently banned from the store due to threatening behaviour towards one of our colleagues.

However, we appreciate that we should not have refused to serve the customer buying items in this instance and apologise for the error we have made.

Heard did ensure the woman received the milkshake after a friend entered the store to complete the purchase.

Well done Daniel, the homeless are human and deserve to be treated as such.
