Otis Johnson was 25 when he was sentenced to a 44-years in jail for the attempted murder of a police officer.
In August 2014 he was finally released, at the age of 69. A lot has changed since then, and this video by Al Jazeera shows Johnson as he enters back into society.
The film shows him getting out the subway at Time’s Square in New York, where everything is pretty overwhelming.
The first thing he notices is that everyone has wires in their ears and are talking to themselves, and that no one is looking where they’re going – welcome to the future.
According to Al Jazeera, Johnson is part of a small percentage of prisoners who are let out of jail after serving at least 20 years – which is less than 0.7% of state prisoners released that year.
Over the years he’s learnt to let things go, and not hold onto anger – a lesson we could all learn from.
