Martin Luther King’s Granddaughter Gives ‘I Have A Dream’ Speech On Gun Control

The March For Our Lives drew thousands of people across the USA in what was a historic moment for gun reform.

Dozens of victims of mass shootings spoke throughout the day in Washington and beyond but one girl’s words have captured the hearts of the world.

The nine-year-old girl, Yolanda Renne King, stood on stage in the US capital in front of an estimated 800,000 people, and gave an incredibly emotional speech.

The significance of her words? They came from the granddaughter of Martin Luther King Jr.

Yolanda was joined on stage by Parkland shooting survivor Jaclyn Corin, and gave her own version of King’s famous ‘I have a dream’ speech, which was made in Washington in 1963.

The speech called on people across the US to rally against gun violence and begin to implement a ‘gun-free world’.

She said:

My grandfather had a dream that his four little children will not be judged by the colour of the skin, but the content of their character.

I have a dream that enough is enough. And that this should be a gun-free world, period.

Spread the word, have you heard? All across the nation, we are going to be a great generation.

Yolanda wasn’t the only one of Dr King’s relatives at the rally, as his daughter Bernice was also present.

Bernice, Yolanda’s auntie, has posted several messages in support of the students on the march and has been vocal on social media.

One of the other notable speeches came from Emma Gonzalez, whose speech lasted the exact time it took the gunman of the Parkland shooting to kill 17 people. The emotional speech lasted exactly six minutes and 20 seconds.

In part of the speech, Emma said:

Six minutes and about 20 seconds. In a little over six minutes, 17 of our friends were taken from us, 15 were injured and everyone – absolutely everyone – in the Douglas community was forever altered.

Everyone who was there understands, everyone who has been touched by the cold grip of gun violence understands.

The marches took place in dozens of cities across the USA including New York, Miami, Houston, Atlanta, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh – as well as one in London.

There were also rallies in nations such as Israel, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Belgium, India, France and Chile, according to NBC News.

Emma herself estimated that there were a total of 800 marches occurring in total, with even one happening in Antarctica.

Twenty student speakers who all survived mass shootings spoke at the main rally in Washington.
