A Mayor and two young journalists have been mysteriously shot dead by a sniper in Finland.

The trio, all believed to be female, were assassinated by the gunman as they left a restaurant in the southeastern Finish town of Imatra late last night, reports Sky News.

No motive for the attack has been found although the circumstances seem to be shrouded in dark mystery.

All three of the victims were shot numerous times in the head and torso by the powerful rifle all dying almost instantly.

Though it is thought that the Mayor and journalists did not know one another, leading police to refer to the shooting as a ‘random attack’, it seems quite bizarre that the killer did not target anybody else and willingly accepted arrest.

A reporter at the scene of the crime, Jari Tanskanen, wrote:

The persons were exiting the restaurant when they were fired upon. People here are devastated.

A spokeswoman for the South Karelia Social and Health Care District, said:

We decided to open a crisis center after the shooting occurred right in the middle of the town near restaurants and nightclubs.

At the minute no other details are available.
