Vegans rejoice! McDonalds are trialling its first ever vegan burger – called, you guessed it, the McVegan.
At the moment, the McVegan can only be found at a Maccies in Tampere, Finland, where it’ll be available as a trial until the end of November.
If, at the end of the trial, the burger is successful, the fast-food chain will make a decision on its future and could be rolled out across more locations, according to Veggie Athletic.
The McVegan is made up of a soy-based burger patty in a bun with all the standard McDonalds fillings – tomato, salad and pickles and comes complete with a vegan McFeast sauce.
Marketing Director of McDonald’s in Finland, Christoffer Rönnblad said he was happy with the response to the new dish, saying it has been ‘mostly positive’:
We are following the reaction with interest and we are happy to receive feedback. That’s the purpose of the trial.
The vegan hamburger required extensive in-house product development. The [vegan] hamburger steak is soy-based.We were really passionate about finding a steak that tastes really good.
Mr Rönnblad said, whether the McVegan does well or not, this particular franchise will look to develop its meat-free offerings.
One woman, by the name of ‘nooramariam’ on Instagram said she’d not had a McDonalds for more than 2o years but went in to try the McVegan, writing:
After boycotting McDonald’s for 20+ years I had to try the new #mcvegan. And then there were #cinnamonrolls at the uni. Both really good. So hard being vegan, have to eat all the time.
And you can make a meal of it by ordering the burger with a side of chips, which are also vegan.
Mr Rönnblad continued:
Yes, they are made here in Finland from potatoes and baked in vegetable oil.
The fries are completely vegan.
In other fast-food news, and coming to the UK, KFC have announced the launch of it’s Double Down burger, which is certainly not vegan.
The Double Down comprises of two pieces of chicken instead of a breaded bun.
Pushing the boundaries of what we know to be a burger, the Double Down sandwich consists of a hearty helping of bacon, Monterey Jack Cheese and BBQ sauce, all wedged between two of KFC’s iconic chicken breast fillets.
In a head spinning twist, there isn’t a crumb of bread to be found on this meaty meal. The chicken is the bun.
Hailed by many burger aficionados as the world’s best fast food sandwich, the Double Down has already gained a die-hard fanbase across the US, Australia and New Zealand.
The Double Down will be available in UK stores from Monday (9th October), for six weeks only.
Innovation Director at KFC UK and Ireland, Jack Hinchliffe, said:
There’s been so much excitement for the Double Down since it first launched to the US in 2010,
It’s sold out in every country that it’s been released in, so we’re anticipating it’ll be a sell-out success here in the UK.
So there’s a bit of news for fast-food fans, vegetarian, vegan or a hardcore meat-eater.
