Meghan Markle has officially closed all of her social media accounts as required by royal family protocol.
Any social media announcements made by Markle will now go through the official social media accounts of the royal family.
Prince Harry’s fiancee shut down her lifestyle website The Tig, last year in April but Kensington Palace officially confirmed today, January 10, Markle’s Instagram, Facebook and Twitter have all been closed.
The palace said:
Ms Markle is grateful to everyone who has followed her social media accounts over the years.
However, as she has not used them for some time, she has taken the decision to close them.
The closure of her accounts was announced after the couple made their first public visit in London, before then, she had at least 1.9 million people following her on Instagram, 350,000 on Twitter and her official Facebook page had amassed 800,000 likes.
Harry and Meghan were in Brixton, South London yesterday and were greeted by crowds of well-wishers at community radio station, Reprezent, which teaches young people skills in media broadcasting.
Reprezent DJ, Jeremiah Asiamah, described Meghan and Harry as a ‘power couple’ during their visit adding ‘they became family in the space of five minutes’.
Speaking to the BBC, Asiamah said:
Meghan was beautiful, such an amazing character, if there’s any way you could describe a power couple in this modern day and age, it’s definitely them.
Reprezent FM founder Shane Carey welcomed their visit, which put the local station in ‘the spotlight… from all the world’s media’.
During the visit, Meghan Markle praised presenter YV Shells in recognition of his work in promoting women on the station.
She said:
Empowering the women to make sure they’re in a space where it’s not as much [male] driven, to be the man there supporting, I think that’s incredible.
The couple also visited local pop-up – Pop Brixton – a local community project helping out local start-ups and restaurants.
Prince Harry made headlines last year when he announced his proposal to the former Suits actress and the two are set to tie the knot on May 19 this year.
On Christmas Eve, when the Royals traditionally exchange gifts, Meghan’s choice of gift for The Queen went down an absolute treat, according to The Daily Star.
A ‘Royal source’ told the paper, the gift was a singing toy hamster – and just after she’d opened it, one of her corgis ‘snatched it off her’.
The source said:
Meghan bought a little hamster that sings with a little rope for Her Majesty.
It was so funny, especially when the corgis tried to take hold of the toy.
She laughed and said ‘they can keep my dogs company!’.
Despite closing her social media accounts you can still follow Meghan Markle’s daily life and royal engagements on the Official Kennsignton Palace Instagram and Twitter accounts.
