In the midst of the United States’ controversial immigration policy, separating families who are trying to cross the Mexican border, First Lady Melania Trump paid a visit to immigrant children at the Texas border.
However, like anything the Trump’s do, it was marred by controversy as the FLOTUS was criticised for her choice of attire.
As Melania was boarding the plane to go to the Texas border, she was snapped by photographers wearing a green khaki jacket which bore the slogan: ‘I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?’.
Considering the nature of her visit, she was accused of being ‘tone deaf’ and while it may not have been intentional, it was certainly an error in judgement.
According to the Daily Mail, the 48-year-old First Lady was snapped arriving at the Andrews Air Force Base, in Maryland, wearing the satirical jacket from Zara, which had the controversial message scrawled in big bold white letters on the back, before taking off for Texas.
When she arrived, she was no longer wearing the jacket. Instead, the First lady – who’s styled by Hervé Pierre – disembarked wearing a cream-top jacket.
It’s unknown whether someone among her staff made her aware of the controversial style choice or if the decision to change was her own.
Her change in attire didn’t stop people on social media slamming Melania for her bad taste, while others ironically claimed she was the only ‘honest’ Trump.
Her spokesperson, Stephanie Grisham, was quick to shut down any hint of negative subliminal messaging, stating:
It’s a jacket. There was no hidden message. After today’s important visit to Texas, I hope this isn’t what the media is going to choose to focus on.
She also insisted the trip to the children’s immigration camps was Melania’s idea, adding:
Her goals are to thank law enforcement and social services providers for their hard work, lend support and hear more on how the administration can build upon the already existing efforts to reunite children with their families.
Mrs Trump hates to see children separated from their families and hopes both sides of the aisle can finally come together to achieve successful immigration reform.
She believes we need to be a country that follows all laws, but also a country that governs with heart.
While on her visit to Texas, Grisham explained the First Lady would continue to be a vocal presence on the important subject of reuniting children who’ve been separated from their families.
This comes after President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday (June 21), as officials try to figure out a solution to a problem his administration created.
Grisham went on to say:
While we’re going through that process she’s going to lend her support and promote family reunification and I’m sure she’ll continue to give her husband opinions on what she’s thinking along the way.
She also emphasised how much the First Lady wants to see children reunited with their families, saying she’ll do everything she can, as well as speaking her opinions as much as she can.
The First Lady’s visit to see the young children who are being held at the border, comes at the same time President Trump made claims of a ‘massive child smuggling industry’ at the US/Mexican border.
In Washington D.C. Trump spoke for a long time before his cabinets, claiming there was a ‘massive child smuggling industry’.
