You may have heard that Mexican drug lord El Chapo has escaped prison for the third time – people might have gotten a bit carried away though.
We didn’t have any confirmation either way about the notoriously slippery Chapo’s whereabouts – but that didn’t stop Twitter going mental and working itself into a lather.
The main reasoning behind the rumours that he’d escaped was that he was trending on Twitter, reported The Metro.
So he somehow started trending because he was trending – which doesn’t even make sense.
Classic banter from the cheeky Chapo.
You can see why people got excited, it would be huge news if the former head of the Sinaloa cartel had managed to escape a maximum security prison – again.
Chapo, real name Joaquin Guzman, had already embarrassed Mexico by escaping prison in both 2001 and 2015.
However, Mexican authorities themselves have taken to Twitter to pour cold water on the hyped-up speculation about.
Mexican politican Miguel A.OsorioChong Tweeted a sad looking El Chapo sitting very definitely in prison with the caption: ‘For the rumors, an image… ‘

So he’s not managed another miraculous escape after all. El Chapo fans will be disappointed. But no doubt many civilians who suffered as a result of his crimes will breathe a sigh of relief.
Guzman is waiting to discover whether he’ll be extradited to the U.S. to face trial on drug trafficking charges.
