This grim reaper of a year continued to take its toll yesterday as the world mourned the passing of yet another cultural icon – Prince.
Everyone rushed to pay tribute to the 57-year-old star in their own special way including MTV, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
Shortly following the death of the legendary R&B/pop singer-songwriter, the network changed its logo from yellow to purple – nice gesture – and quickly switched out its scheduled content for a back-to-back run of his most influential music videos.

Undoubtedly this is a great gesture from the channel, but unfortunately it didn’t quite go according to plan…
As mourning viewers watched Prince’s impressive backlog of music videos including Kiss, Let’s Go Crazy, Raspberry Beret and When Doves Cry they were suddenly faced with none other than DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince’s 1987 single Girls Ain’t Nothing But Trouble.
Of course Twitter users were quick to point out the mistake:

Note to MTV: Playing a “Fresh Prince” video during a Prince Tribute is just wrong. What are U thinking???? #PrinceandWillSmithareNotTheSame

Lol I think MTV just threw a Fresh Prince song into the mix by accident. Wrong Prince, guys.

As yet a presumably red-faced MTV have had no comment…
