Facebook has announced a potentially annoying update to its messaging service, starting ‘within the next few weeks’.

So yeah, it’s happening, adverts will start appearing in Facebook Messenger after ‘successful’ trials in Australia and Thailand.

Thankfully, you won’t be inundated by these adverts during conversations, but they will start to appear between the threads in your inbox.

If you tap on them it will either take you to the company’s website or their Messenger chatbot, which Facebook has been trying hard to push over the last year, according to the Independent.

The company has been testing Messenger ads in Thailand and Australia since January, and described the tests as ‘promising’.

The social media platform will be rolling the ads out to Messenger users gradually, reports Business Insider, starting within the ‘next few weeks’.

Just last month, Facebook announced a new-look Messenger which goes a little something like this…

At the top of the home page you will find a handful of your most recent messages, but below that there will be a new feature entitled ‘favourites’ which will allow users to know exactly who you speak to the most by providing a handy little row of those you speak to (or type to, rather) the most.

Messenger will also let you know when your friends are ‘active’ by sticking a green button next to their name, similar to the way Facebook tells you somebody is online on the desktop version of the site.

And, finally, Messenger will also inform you about your all of your pals’ birthdays just to make sure that you never miss out on a quick happy birthday message.

Not sure how we feel about the ads, but we’ll have to wait and see.
