Quentin Tarantino is not an easy man to impress, after all this is a man who has (categorically) never directed a bad film in his life.
So when the man who’s responsible for classics such as Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown and the Kill Bill series says your film made him cry tears of joy, you know you’ve done a good job.
It’s something director Luca Guadagnino, was able to do with his upcoming film, Suspiria.
The supernatural horror film comes from the same mind who directed 2017’s critically acclaimed coming of age drama Call Me By Your Name. According to Guadagnino himself, Tarantino was reduced to tears after he screened his latest film, which is an adaptation of the 1977 original by Dario Argento.
Speaking to Italian entertainment website Repubblica, Guadagnino says:
I showed it to Quentin Tarantino. We’ve been friends since our jury duty at the Venice Film Festival. I was nervous but eager to hear his advice. We saw it at his place and his reaction warmed me.
Guadagnino went on to say:
He was enthusiastic about it – in the end, he was crying and hugged me. Because it’s a horror movie but also a melodrama, my goal was to make you look at the horror without being able to take [your eyes off the screen] because you’re captivated by the characters. Amazon is very happy.
Suspiria, which stars Fifty Shades actor Dakota Johnson, Chloë Grace Moretz, Mia Goth and Tilda Swinton, is expected to be released in the US on November 2. However, a UK date has yet to be announced.
According to the plot synopsis:
A darkness swirls at the centre of a world-renowned dance company, one that will engulf the artistic director, an ambitious young dancer, and a grieving psychotherapist. Some will succumb to the nightmare. Others will finally wake up.
Johnson was so traumatised by one scene she filmed she required therapy.
Speaking to Elle, she said:
Making Suspiria], no lie, f**ked me up so much that I had to go to therapy.
We were in an abandoned hotel on top of a mountain. It had 30 telephone poles on the roof, so there was electricity pulsating through the building, and everyone was shocking each other. It was cold as s**t, and so dry.
Tarantino’s next film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, may conjure images of classic westerns (especially as Tarantino has had a knack for them recently, thanks to The Hateful Eight and Django Unchained), but as Leonardo DiCaprio has just revealed on Instagram, Tarantino has gone deep into 1960’s fashion while expanding on the infamous Manson family murders.
Leo, who last worked with Tarantino on the excellent Django Unchained as the evil plantation owner Calvin Candie, is teaming up with Pitt as characters Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth, respectively.

Speaking about the pairing of Pitt and DiCaprio to Deadline, Tarantino said:
I’m very excited to tell this story of an LA and a Hollywood that don’t exist anymore. And I couldn’t be happier about the dynamic teaming of DiCaprio & Pitt as Rick & Cliff.
The movie is set in 1969, and focuses on the pair – a struggling actor and a stuntman – as they try to establish careers in Hollywood while also somehow becoming entangled in the Manson Family murders, as IndieWire reports.
In the film, Dalton and Booth live next door to Sharon Tate, wife of director Roman Polanski and victim of the Manson Family. Tate will be played Margot Robbie, who joins other cast members Burt Reynolds, Kurt Russell, Tim Roth and Michael Madsen.
