BBCBlackadder and Baldrick could be back on our TV screens soon as one of the main stars of the classic sitcom, Tony Robinson, has said that a return is “on the cards”.
The only sticking point could be Hugh Laurie’s pricetag as Robinson, who played loyal dim-witted servant Baldrick on all four series of the show, joked that they may struggle to afford Laurie now that he’s a major star in the U.S. thanks to his role on medical drama House.
Speaking to the Sun, comedian and TV presenter Robinson said:
I do think a new series of Blackadder is on the cards. I have spoken to virtually all the cast about this now. The only problem is Hugh’s fee. He’s a huge star now – or so he’d like to think.
Laurie is believed to have been paid £250,000 an episode for House. We can’t imagine the BBC could offer him that sort of cash, but we’re sure he’d just be happy to be reunited with the incredible cast.
Blackadder featured Rowan Atkinson in the title role as the sarcastic anti-hero surrounded by idiots, and the various series’ spanned medieval England, the Tudor period, the Regency and World War I.
The show ended in 1989 (was it really that long ago?!), although a special episode Blackadder Back & Forth was made for the Millennium Dome in 1999.
Robinson added:
Expectations for a new series will be high because people not only remember the original – they remember who they were when it was on. It’s a big danger.
We’d love to see Blackadder back on our TV screens soon and we hope the cast’s cunning plan comes to fruition. The question is, when and where would the show be set this time around?
