William Sweeney, the FBI assistant director in charge of New York explained that investigators had found evidence linking Rahami to both the devices found in New Jersey and New York.

He went on to add that there was no indication a terror cell was active in either New Jersey or New York.

Those who know Mr Rahami have said that the family were ordinary and ‘Americanised’ with one adding: ‘[he’s] very friendly guy, that’s what’s so scary’.
