12 people lost their lives and over 70 were injured as Holmes stepped into the cinema dressed in body armour, and shot mercilessly into the crowd. Images also released show the elaborate booby-traps Holmes set up in his apartment in an attempt to maim yet more people when police went to investigate.

Holmes, 27, was convicted of 165 felonies and given a life sentence last month as the jury couldn’t reach an agreement that he should face the death penalty. Fair warning that the images below are pretty graphic.
