A reporter in San Francisco who was reporting live from the scene of a fatal shooting was interrupted when another news crew at the scene had their camera stolen at gun point.
The video of the shocking moment shows Cara Liu from KTVU getting ready to begin her report when she suddenly says, “Hold on, hold on, wait” and runs off camera.
According to SFGate, Liu spotted a man sneak up behind KNTV camera man Alan Waples and put a gun to his head before pistol whipping him and stealing the station’s camera.
The robbery was reportedly carried out by three men, who threw the camera and a tripod in a BMW and sped away from the scene.
Incredibly, this isn’t as rare an occurrence as you might expect. A KTVU crew was robbed of a live transmission unit and a microphone while reporting from a doughnut shop in February.
According to SFGate, this has led to an increase in security guards having to accompany news crews, “particularly for stories in Oakland (California)”.
Liu, the reporter in the video, has experienced this kind of violence first hand, as well. She was reportedly punched in the head by a woman when she was reporting on another shooting in Oakland last year.
Who’d be a journalist, eh?
