In an incredible day for democracy, North Korea has just seen a 99.97% voter turnout at their recent election.
But when people got to the polls, they only had one candidate to choose from, making the election process a whole lot easier. In the single party state, dissenting votes are considered treason.
Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un exercises complete control over the country’s 24.9 million citizens. He inherited power in 2011 after the death of his father, Kim Jong-il.
Reuters These were the first local elections since he took over, and reportedly there was a carnival atmosphere, with voters “singing and dancing” their way to the polling stations.
The official Korean Central News Agency said:
All participants took part in the elections with extraordinary enthusiasm to cement the revolutionary power through the elections of deputies to the local people’s assemblies.
And in case you were wondering, the missing 0.03% were absent from the country so couldn’t vote. In North Korea even the elderly and the ill make it out to celebrate the greatness of their Supreme Leader, voting at special mobile ballot boxes.
With results expected to be announced next week, the world holds its breath in anticipation.
