Olivia Colman has won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in The Favourite at the 91st Academy Awards.
The British actor was crowned Best Actress at the Academy Awards today (February 25), facing off competition from Glenn Close (The Wife), Yalitza Aparicio (Roma), Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born) and Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?).
Colman delivered a fantastic performance as Queen Anne in director Yorgos Lanthimos’ film The Favourite.
The award was the biggest surprise of the night, as Close was the clear favourite to win the category.
Also up for Best Actress for her performance in The Wife, having previously been nominated for six other acting Academy Awards, Close has more nominations without a win than any other living actor.
Tonight was yet again not her night as Colman was announced the winner. While I do feel bad for Close, I am sure she’ll be nominated again, and Colman truly deserved this year’s award.
She is absolutely phenomenal in The Favourite, and we all need to bow down to our queen.

An emotional Colman took to the stage in disbelief as her name was called out.
Her speech was just as inspiring as she is:
To be in this category with this extraordinary women, Glenn Close, you have been my idol for so long and this is not how I wanted it to be, I think you are amazing and I love you very much.
Any little girl whose practising her speech on the tele, you never know. And when I used to work as a cleaner, and I loved that job, I used to spend quite a lot of my time imagining this. Thank you so much!
Amazing! Congratulations!
