Disgraced Olympian Oscar Pistorius has been rushed to hospital with injuries to his wrists after allegedly self-harming.
Pistorius was taken from Kgosi Mampuru II prison – where he’s serving a six year sentence for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp – to Pretoria’s Kalafong Hospital on Saturday afternoon at around 12.30pm with wrist injuries.
Officials at the prison claim Pistorius told them he hurt himself falling out of bed, The Mirror reports.
However, City Press report that, according to an inside source, Pistorius had in fact intentionally injured himself and that blades were found in his cell.
Oscar Pistorius was sentenced to six years in prison last month for shooting and killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day, 2013.
The sentence has been the subject of outrage in South Africa as it’s far below the country’s recommended 15-year jail term for murder.
Pistorius was originally found guilty of culpable homicide but his conviction was later upgraded to murder.
For his part, Pistorius denies murdering Ms Steenkamp. Instead, he claims he mistook Reeva for an intruder, and feeling vulnerable, accidentally shot her through his bathroom door.
The judge who sentenced Pistorius, Thokozile Masipa, described him as a ‘fallen hero and broken man’ who is suffering from both depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.
