Sunderland and England footballer Adam Johnson has been found not guilty on one count of sexual activity with a child.

The ex-Sunderland star has been cleared on one of the charges relating to the girl performing a sex act on him but the jury has yet to reach a verdict on a second similar count, reports the Mirror.

The 28-year-old was sacked by Sunderland FC when he admitted grooming a 15-year-old girl and kissing her in his Range Rover.

Johnson pleaded guilty to child grooming and one count of sexual activity, however he denied two counts of sexual activity – involving penetration – with a child.

The footballer admitted he groomed the teenager in a series of hundreds of social media messages the pair exchanged and that he kissed her when they met in his vehicle.

However the girl told the jury at Bradford Crown Court that the encounter went much further.

She said Johnson put his hands in her pants and that she performed oral sex on him. Johnson told the court that nothing happened beyond kissing.

Johnson did not show any emotion in the dock as he was found not guilty on the first charge and the jury have now been sent back out to continue deliberating the second count – relating to alleged sexual touching.

The judge has said he will not accept a majority verdict from the jury of eight women and four men – they will have to reach a unanimous decision.

Adam Johnson has been found guilty on the remaining charge of sexual activity with a child.

Johnson found guilty of penetrating a schoolgirl with his fingers by majority verdict of 10-2.

According to the Telegraph, the jury said it had been unable to reach a verdict on the remaining charge. At that point, the judge sent the jury away to continue deliberating telling them he would accept a majority verdict. A short time later, they returned with the guilty verdict.

The judge has confirmed he will serve a custodial sentence.
