Today, August 5, news broke of the passing of one half of the Chuckle Brothers, Barry Chuckle.
The legendary entertainer, who passed away at the age of 73, enjoyed a successful career in comedy and television, spanning over 50 years.
His manager, Phil Dale, along with brother, Paul, have paid heartbreaking tributes, while a whole host of celebrities have also paid their respects across social media.
His manager, Phil Dale, said in a statement to the Press Association:
It is with great sadness that the family announce that Barry passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his wife Ann and all his family.
The family would like to express their thanks to the many people who have been fans of the Chuckle Brothers and they know that they will share in part the great, great loss they feel.
Barry, real name Barry Elliott, was born in Rotherham, Yorkshire, in 1944 and at the age of 23, he and brother Paul – as The Chuckle Brothers – won the talent show, Opportunity Knocks, in 1967.
However, it wasn’t until 20 years later, in 1987, when the pair hit our screens on the BBC, starring in their own show, ChuckleVision.
ChuckleVision ran for 21 series and aired from 1987 to 2009.
Most recently though, the comedy duo were said to be filming for a new Channel 5 show, titled ChuckleTime, reports the Metro.
Barry had said it was just like the wonderful days of filming ChuckleVision for BBC One.
However Barry was reported to be unwell towards the end of filming and summer work was cancelled while he rested at his doctors request.
Unfortunately, according to reps, not long after this, his health deteriorated.
In a heartbreaking tribute to his brother, Paul said:
I’ve not just lost my brother, I’ve lost my theatrical partner of many, many years and my very best friend.
Other stars have paid tribute to the comedian too, with former boxer Frank Bruno taking to Twitter to say:
Very sad news this morning. A very funny man, you’ve left happy memories for so many people “To me to you “ RIP #barrychuckle ??
CBeebies presenter, Chris Jarvis, wrote on social media:
On screen he was hilarious, on stage even more so but off stage Barry was also the kindest of gentlemen. RIP Barry. Love to all his family including all the brothers.
And author Terry Pratchett tweeted:
He and Paul took daft to a blessedly new level. RIP Barry Chuckle.
Barry’s manager, Mr Dale concluded:
There will be no further comment at the moment and it would be much appreciated if the privacy of Barry’s family is respected at this most difficult time.
